July 23, 2008: Whereas items in Second Life are cheap, staff is not. When the build is done and the contractors and helpers have dispersed, it still need to be maintained. It is very important to remember this while building. It's easy to create fancy gizmos, harder to keep them fresh with information. Things need to be engineered for ease of maintenance. For example, where possible identical items that occur in multiple places should be centrally configured, and configuration should preferentially take place by editing notecards rather than editing code.

July 15, 2008: With Linden Lab's new system, for example, Second Life users could create business cards linked to external Web pages, so that they're updated when the pages are, or virtual MP3 players connected to Web radio services. The company is also working to make it easy for users to share 2-D data such as Microsoft Word files or PowerPoint presentations with other users inside the virtual world. Miller says that Linden Lab plans to deliver these new technologies by the end of this year, as part of its Web Media Initiative.
